A 19-year-old U.S. student at George Washington University, has drowned on the Wild Coast after he and a group of friends decided to go for a late night swim on Sunday 30th of August. The student was staying at the Bulungula Lodge at the Wild Coast with a group of University of Cape Town students on a break from his study-abroad program.
Safe Coastal Tourism wants to remind beachgoers at the Wildcoast of the only lifesaving safety warning: The sea at the Wild Coast is not safe for swimming! Locals know, they are familiar with the risks of the sea, tourists are mostly unaware of or underestimate the dangers of the sea.
In 2007, another young man from Flanders, has drowned in that same area. His body was never found.
How many more drownings are needed before local touristic sector realizes this and communicates this warning to its guests? Even more if the area is remote and help is always far away...
