Launch of new Drowning Prevention Programme by Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving
03/12/2015
On 29 November 2015 Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving Club launched its new drowning prevention initiative. This club has been awarded already three times (in 2012, 2013 and 2014) with the Bavo Verheyden award, named after Bavo Verheyden, a young Belgian man who tragically lost his life to drowning while swimming at the Wild Coast. This award has been set up by Lifesaving South Africa in October 2011 for the best drowning prevention programme in South Africa.

As education plays a major role in preventing drowning, drowning prevention programmes should pay great attention to educate the public, including tourists. The new initiative launched by Bluewater Bay Surf Lifesaving in Nelson Mandela Bay includes a river patrol, land patrols on the river banks, the erection of warning signage, pamphlet distribution and the publication of a children's book in English, Afrikaans and isiXhosa.
