private sector commitment to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism
In 2011, UNWTO formulated a Private Sector Commitment to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism, for the signature of private enterprises worldwide.
In signing the commitment, companies pledge to uphold, promote and implement the values of responsible and sustainable tourism development championed by the Code.
Important to Safe Coastal Tourism is the commitment tourism professionals have an obligation to provide tourists with objective and honest information on their destinations and the conditions of travel hospitality and stays. It is imperative that they show concern, in cooperation with public authorities, for their client's security, safety and repatriations, ....
The list of companies and associations which have signed the Private Sector Commitment to the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism can be found here.
Safe Coastal Tourism was interested in the way the Ethical Committee evaluates the Commitment signed by companies and associations in the Private Sector. So it submitted this question to the Ethical Committee. The issue of the implementation of the Code by the private sector is scheduled as one of the important subjects on the agenda of the next meeting of the Ethics Committee which will take place in November 2015.
As the implementation of the Code of Ethics by the signatories of the Private Sector Commitment is a relatively new initiative of the UNWTO, the monitoring fo this implementation is only starting now with the establishment of the newly reformed Ethics Committee, which met for the first time in February 2014.
After signing up to the Commitment, a signatory of the Private Sector Commitment is given a reasonable time to progressively put into practice the various ethical principles and standards of the Code. A Reporting Questionnaire intended to facilitate the scope and contents of the reporting on the matter by a signatory is expected to be filled out and submitted within two years of the signing. Then the Committee will be in a position to evaluate the degree of compliance to the ethical standards of the Code. If no reporting is received within two years of the signing or the implementation doesn't meet the ethical standards of the Code, the association will be deleted from the list of signatories of the Private Sector Commitment.
