A swimmer drowned, swept away by strong currents, just a day after a local angler drowned while fishing from a rocky outcrop. A month before two Grade 9 pupils, both 16 and from Ngqeleni schools, had drowned at Second Beach.

Two SANDF soldiers presumed drowned at Second Beach, Port St Johns. While swimming one man got into difficulty in the surf and another man went into the surf to attempt to assist but he took got into difficulty. Both men disappeared under water.

During the day, at Second Beach in Port St Johns, people from Mount Frere were enjoying themselves at the beach. A 26-year-old lady fell into the water and passed away.

An eight-year-old girl drowned at popular Second Beach in Port St Johns. Her 12-year-old friend survived and was taken to hospital. According to Provincial health spokesman Sizwe Kupelo the drowning occurred shortly after lifeguards had knocked off duty for the day and gone home.
Another bather, said to be a middle- aged man from Lusikisiki, is believed also to have drowned at the same beach.
