Shark beach made safer, PSJ lifeguards given new rescue equipment

It was exactly 3 years ago, Bavo Verheyden drowned at Ntafufu River Beach, which is in the area of Port St Johns. Safe Coastal Tourism welcomes and encourages all these initiatives to save lives and hopes they will be continued forever.

- Economic development MEC Mcebisi Jonas and Port St Johns mayor Mnyamezeli Mangqo handed state-of-the-art equipment to the lifeguards: rescue crafts, boards, shark attack packs, trauma kits and paddles.
- Boats are promised to the lifeguards to ensure their maximum capacity in managing the beaches.
- The commitment has been made by the MEC on guarding the beaches all year round.
- The willingness has been expressed to educate people about the dangers of being in the sea and how to protect themselves.
- A partnership with the SA Weather Services has been established to install closed-circuit television cameras on certain beaches to monitor bathers and surf conditions as well as sharks.
